Competing in an Algorithmic World : The End of the Funnel and the Rise of Growth Ecosystems

For decades, executing marketing plans around funnels has been one of the most enduring frameworks in business.

Consumers moved from awareness to consideration, from consideration to purchase, and from purchase to loyalty.

It is also becoming one of the least representative of how growth actually happens now and modern growth is increasingly ecosystem-driven. Consumers no longer move through linear pathways.

They navigate interconnected networks of content, commerce, communities, creators, recommendations and experiences.

Research shows consumers exposed to connected experiences across video, display, commerce and other coordinated touchpoints delivered dramatically stronger outcomes than those exposed to isolated interactions.

Integrated exposure generate higher product page views, more add-to-cart actions, and therefore more purchases. The lesson is that connected touchpoints create compounding effects that siloed marketing simply cannot replicate.

Conventionally, separate teams have managed awareness, performance, commerce, retention and customer experience. Success has been measured through individual channel metrics.

Consumers now experience brands as ecosystems.

Consumers move fluidly between these activities, often simultaneously, with discovery, evaluation and purchase increasingly occurring within the same connected environment.

This is why many new emerging brands are growing disproportionately fast. Rather than treating content, commerce, community and customer experience as separate functions, they build integrated systems where each reinforces the others.

Many of today’s fastest-growing challengers can’t outspend incumbents but they are still  winning because they build growth systems where product, community, commerce and advocacy reinforce one another. Community is the infrastructure that accelerates discovery, trust and conversion simultaneously.

This is also where the AI Marketing Maturity Study provides an important organisational lesson. The highest-performing organisations are increasingly moving beyond isolated AI deployments towards integrated systems that connect customer journeys, measurement frameworks, decision engines and activation platforms.

It is a cross-functional capability that sits at the intersection of brand, commerce, technology, customer experience, operations and data.  This is why the demise of the funnel matters. The funnel encouraged businesses to think about transactions.

But ecosystems force them to think about relationships. And relationships create far more durable growth.

Key Takeaway :
The future of growth will not be determined by how effectively organisations optimise individual touchpoints. It will be determined by how effectively they orchestrate entire ecosystems. In an interconnected marketplace, the system increasingly outperforms the campaign.
