Year in Review 2025: The Golden Year of Local Streaming Content in Indonesia

Jakarta, December 19, 2025 — The year 2025 marked a pivotal phase for Indonesia’s streaming industry. Shifts in viewing behavior, accelerated digital adoption, and the growing appeal of local content have firmly positioned streaming as a primary medium for entertainment consumption across the country.

Based on aggregated internal data from Vidio throughout 2025, the industry experienced significant acceleration compared to the previous year. As Indonesia’s largest OTT platform, these trends also reflect broader national streaming dynamics. Total watch time increased by more than 34% year-on-year, while average watch duration per view grew by 22%, indicating deeper audience engagement with OTT services. The paid subscriber base across the industry also continued to expand, reaching millions of active users nationwide.

Audience Penetration Expands, Engagement Strengthens Across Segments

  1. Strong Growth Among Female Viewers, Followed by Steady Male Audience Growth

Streaming growth has been increasingly driven by broader demographic participation. Female viewers recorded notable gains, with watcher growth of +31% YoY and a substantial surge in total watch duration of +89% YoY. This was followed by steady growth among male viewers, with watchers increasing by +6% and watch duration rising by +24% YoY. These trends underscore streaming’s evolution into an inclusive and relevant entertainment medium across gender segments.

2. Major Cities Remain Growth Engines, While Regional Areas Gain Momentum

Geographically, major cities such as Jakarta, Bandung, and Surabaya continued to be key contributors, each posting over 30% year-on-year growth in watch duration. Equally important, consumption strengthened across other regions—including Bali, Central Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, West Sumatra, and North Maluku—signaling wider access and adoption of streaming services nationwide.

 3. Gen Z Takes the Lead as the Most Infiuential Streaming Generation

Younger audiences, particularly Gen Z, emerged as the primary drivers of streaming growth in 2025. Beyond active consumption, this group also shaped trends, conversations, and genre preferences. Viewers under 17 recorded +78% growth in watchers and +145% growth in watch duration, while the 18–24 age group grew by

+65% in watchers, with total watch time nearly tripling (+190% YoY).

 4. Device Flexibility Deffines the Viewing Experience

Streaming growth in 2025 was distributed across multiple devices. Mobile apps remained the backbone of consumption, with iOS usage surging by +75% YoY and Android growing by +31% YoY. Meanwhile, Smart TV consumption rose by +34%,

reflecting a shift toward more immersive, large-screen viewing experiences. Together, these trends highlight viewers’ desire for flexibility in choosing how, when, and on which device they consume content.

Local Content Emerges as the Mainstream Choice

One of the most prominent findings of 2025 was the growing dominance of local content. Stories, characters, and rivalries rooted in everyday Indonesian life proved to be key growth drivers, challenging long-held assumptions that international content such as K-dramas or Hollywood productions always lead audience preference.

Across the industry, local content dominated watch duration in several categories:

  • Series: More than two-thirds of total watch time came from local productions
  • Films: Over 60% of watch duration was driven by Indonesian films
  • Sports: More than 87% of consumption originated from local competitions and sporting events

These trends reaffirm that Indonesian audiences increasingly value emotional connection, cultural relevance, and local representation in digital entertainment.

Sports Remain a Key Pillar: Strong Local Roots, Supported by Global IP

Sports continued to be one of the strongest pillars of the streaming industry. Local competitions contributed the majority of watch duration, while global sports leagues and IP complemented viewer choices. Strong fan loyalty—particularly toward football and competitive sports—continued to drive high consumption, including live and PPV formats.

Combat sports emerged as one of the year’s notable surprises, with a significant rise in PPV transactions and cross-border viewership across Asia. This phenomenon reflects the expanding appetite of Indonesian audiences for more diverse sports entertainment formats.
