What happens when data doesn’t just inform marketing but changes what the creative can say, when it says it, and who it says it to? In this episode of SMARTIES Studio, Rohit Dadwal speaks with Piyuli Bhattacharjee and Abhijit Abhyankar from Cathay Pacific about ‘Takeoff Takeover’—a campaign that used real-time flight data to transform conventional airport advertising into precise, contextual and highly relevant communication.
The challenge was not simply to communicate Cathay Pacific’s premium proposition. It was to make that proposition relevant at the precise moment a traveller was thinking about flying—and ultimately turn Cathay from an option into a choice.
The campaign mapped live flight information, departure times and boarding gates to more than 100 creative variations, allowing messages to respond to the context of individual flights and passengers. A traveller might see a message about Cathay’s seat pitch, cabin experience or business-class seating precisely when they were at the airport and thinking about their journey. But the real story goes beyond technology. How do you know when data is telling you something useful?
Where does data stop and creativity begin? How do you scale contextual relevance without losing the central creative idea? And how do you get creative, media, data and technology teams to work as one? Rohit goes behind the scenes with the Cathay team to explore the decisions, doubts, operational challenges and brand guardrails that shaped Takeoff Takeover—including why they chose not to directly call out competitors, despite knowing it could make the creative more provocative.
The conversation offers lessons for marketers well beyond aviation: how to turn data into insight, insight into creative opportunity, and precision into meaningful brand choice. SMARTIES Studio goes beyond the awards to explore the thinking, strategy and creativity behind impactful marketing.
